What happens when young people help shape the places where they learn, play and connect?

Playscape Co-Lab is an inspiring collaboration between Deakin University’s School of Architecture and Built Environment and Herne Hill Primary School, led by Dr Md Mizanur Rashid.

Eighteen student leaders aged 8–12 have worked alongside Deakin architecture academics and students through hands-on workshops, model-making, site analysis and design thinking to imagine a future play space for their school community.

Hosted in the A+B Gallery, an open-plan space overlooking Corio Bay, the exhibition brings the project to life through student-made models, design concepts and reflections.

Exploring co-design, placemaking, child-friendly cities and participatory design, Playscape Co-Lab puts young voices at the heart of the built environment. While the ideas are aspirational, they invite students to dream boldly about the spaces they inhabit—and invite us all to imagine what’s possible when young people help shape the future of their community.
