Beaches across the region experience both short-term erosion, and research suggests that in some locations the shoreline has receded further inland from previously recorded positions.
The City of Greater Geelong has established two artificial reefs with the aim of mitigating further loss of coastal land. Designed to reduce wave energy and prevent coastal erosion in vulnerable areas, these reefs are also providing valuable insights into the role of nature-based infrastructure in coastal management.
The session will also explore future reef installations focused on habitat creation and environmental benefits. Using recycled materials, these structures are designed to be eco-friendly, with a low carbon footprint and improved energy efficiencies.
